WE NEED TO DO MORE TO END THE HIV EPIDEMIC IN CANADA.
The Canadian government has endorsed the UNAIDS 90-90-90 goals to be achieved by 2020.
% of people living with HIV know their status.
% of people diagnosed with HIV are on treatment.
% of people on treatment have a suppressed viral load.
Here's where we are at as of2016:
86% of people currently living with HIV in Canada know their status.
81% of Canadians who are diagnosed with HIV are on treatment.
91% of Canadians living with HIV on treatment have a suppressed viral load.
There is still more work to be done.
While Canada has achieved the 3rd UNAIDS target, we need to do more to encourage Canadians to get tested and increase access to treatment.
In order to achieve this, Canada must have a strategic and integrated approach towards increasing HIV testing, prevention, treatment, and the elimination of stigma around HIV.
“Our government is committed to eliminating HIV and AIDS as global public health threats. The important research and community-based projects across Canada reflect our renewed focus on supporting evidence-based prevention, reducing stigma and discrimination, and increasing access to testing and treatment for HIV and other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections. We will continue to collaborate with our partners to reduce new HIV infections and improve the lives of those living with HIV.”
